RAW & GRITTY ~ Ridge (Wild #2) ~ by Adriane Leigh

Ridge (Wild #2) by Adriane Leigh

This is an adult contemporary/erotica novel (Rated NC-17)

♥♥♥♥1/2
(Four and a half Hearts)

Book Summary

Sometimes doing the wrong thing feels so right...

I'm a player. I'm an asshole. I'm someone you should stay away from.

I have demons.
I've made mistakes.
And the biggest can't be taken back.

I've gone to hell and back in twenty-nine years and I'm only now coming to terms with moving forward, righting my wrongs, and making amends. Except not everyone deserves forgiveness. Sometimes the damage done is beyond repair.
Everyday is exactly the same. I focus on the pain, in the quest to feel and forget, but I remember everything. When I close my eyes the darkness encroaches and some days it feels like the things that kill me are the things that make me feel alive.

Ridge, like Wild, is a standalone.
Reading Wild first will provide some back story, but is not required to read Ridge.

*This book includes situations that some may find uncomfortable.

 My Summary

First let me say that although this is book 2 in a series, it can be read as a standalone with no problem.
I love stories told from the male POV. I’m not sure if it’s because we get so little of it in the overall romance market. But whatever it is, when it’s done well, I gobble it up. And that’s what we get here. There isn’t a POV jump between the girl and the guy. This is totally all one male POV.
And this male Ridge is a complicated guy with more than enough skeletons in his closet to make you think he needs therapy. And maybe he does, lol. But the story is realistic in isn’t telling. How does one go about fighting the demons of your past? This and many questions will be answered.
One more important thing, if you are curious about reading. This isn’t a story about a guy falling in love with one girl, although I will dare say, you will be happy with the ending. This is a story about struggling with life, vices and demons. It's darker, grittier, and all that more exciting.
Overall, I was captured by the ridges that make up Ridge, lol. He has many layers that I enjoyed peeling through.
My book boyfriend Ridge.

What Day Is It...??? Diva Alana's Re-Cap of Austin Book Fest! + Giveaway!

It's Diva Alana's Hump Day!

I had an ABSOLUTE BLAST with Diva Jennifer and over 30+ authors!  Boy, oh, boy... was I a tired puppy after hauling books around a ballroom for over 4 hours!  But it was worth each and every ache and pain!

Here is the lovely shirt I made for the authors to sign... kind of hard to read, but 'Isn't She' is on the front (spelled out with books) 'Stacked' on the back. I thought it was VERY clever... and it's not easy coming up with something for over 30 authors!  Diva Jen got her very own shirt as well with the same message, but a slightly better layout.

Cora Carmack,
Author of Losing It, Faking It, Finding It, and the upcoming Rusk University series!

 Jay Crownover
author of the Marked Men Series! Rule, Jet, Rome, Nash...

So.... this is just a little taste, a teaser, from the wonderful event hosted by Vilma's Book Blog.  Next week, I'll announce the winners of the signed book and swag giveaway, and share some more pictures and fun things from the event.  Smoochies!

Predator's Serenade - Gemini Island Shifters 2 by Rosanna Leo

PREDATOR’S SERENADE

Book Description:

There are three things that make bear shifter Soren Snow’s skin crawl: mothers, their children, and the great outdoors. Soren is a famed musician and playboy, and he would rather spend his days pressing the flesh with the women in his fan club than developing meaningful relationships. When his brother calls in a favor, forcing Soren to revisit the Ursa Fishing Lodge in Northern Ontario, he couldn’t be more displeased. However, he owes his brother big time.

Gioia Clementine would rather not meet Soren, her drummer son’s rock idol. But when tragedy strikes her home, it seems the only one the boy might respond to is Soren. Gioia begrudgingly agrees to let her son meet him, hoping the rock star won’t turn her tween into a musical misogynist.

When Gioia and Soren meet, the sexual chemistry threatens to set the Ontario woodland ablaze. Can these two opposites find a common ground? And can they manage to resolve their unwanted feelings, even when a mysterious stranger arrives at the lodge, threatening everything?

Excerpt:

Gioia followed Soren's approach with a curious eye. She'd wondered if the miracle kisser would beat a hasty retreat after witnessing her boy fall to pieces, and yet here he was. He wore the same famished look he had right before he'd ruined her for any other man's kiss. And she felt it too. The tingles between her shoulder blade, the gelatin knees, and trembling lips that wanted to gobble him up.

She couldn't. She didn't want to saddle him with such a wreck of a woman or family.

He came right up to her, so close, as if making a mockery of the space that sought to separate them. Weaving his fingers through her hair, he cradled her skull and pulled her close. Tucking her head against his chest, he kissed the top of her head, blazing a trail of hot reaction down her spine. He had new clothes on and smelled fresh and clean. As she breathed him in, he rained soft kisses all over her head.

He knows.

She pulled away, suddenly terrified he'd think she was a travesty of a mother. It's what anyone would think in his case. They'd wonder what Gioia had done wrong to create a monster child. But as she attempted to remove herself from his grasp, Soren fought her by holding her still. Again she tried jerking away from his wall of a chest. He held her firm.

When she tried two more times, each time unsuccessfully, he looked at her and shouted, "Dammit, woman, I am not letting you go, so you can stop pulling away from me!"
Something in Gioia broke. She'd been carrying her sadness around for so long, trying to be strong, and Soren was offering to be strong for her. For just a moment, maybe she could surrender. God only knew how badly she wanted to give herself to the bear man.

He grabbed her tighter, and his hands slid down to mold over her ass cheeks. His warm breath was all over her face, and she took a dizzying dive into the seas of his eyes. He ground her against him, and she was forced to stand on tip toes.

"Gioia," he whispered.

She wound her arms about his tense neck, felt him tense further. Then … a sigh somewhere in his big frame and a relaxation in his muscles. As if he needed to have her wound about him. As if it soothed him as much as her.

"Soren. Please."

As he kissed her, he picked her up, his hands under her bottom. Her miniskirt rode up, and she spared a second to mentally curse her decision to wear it. And then she didn't care.

Kissing her madly, Soren spirited her into the woods.

Daughter of Smoke & Bone by Laini Taylor: Reviews

In anticipation of the release of third book of my favorite series ever, Daughter of Smoke & Bone by Laini Taylor, on April 8, I had to re-read the first two (and a half!) books in the series! Here are my reviews:

Daughter of Smoke & Bone (Daughter of Smoke & Bone #1)
by Laini Taylor
Around the world, black handprints are appearing on doorways, scorched there by winged strangers who have crept through a slit in the sky.

In a dark and dusty shop, a devil’s supply of human teeth grown dangerously low.

And in the tangled lanes of Prague, a young art student is about to be caught up in a brutal otherwordly war.

Meet Karou. She fills her sketchbooks with monsters that may or may not be real, she’s prone to disappearing on mysterious "errands", she speaks many languages - not all of them human - and her bright blue hair actually grows out of her head that color. Who is she? That is the question that haunts her, and she’s about to find out.

When beautiful, haunted Akiva fixes fiery eyes on her in an alley in Marrakesh, the result is blood and starlight, secrets unveiled, and a star-crossed love whose roots drink deep of a violent past. But will Karou live to regret learning the truth about herself?

Hardcover, 418 pages
Published September 27th 2011 by Little, Brown Books for Young Readers

My Review: 5 of 5 stars
Daughter of Smoke and Bone is the kind of book you don't want to end. You know it's going to have to, you know it's getting close, but when it finally gets there, you're still upset because you want the story to continue…you have so much invested in the characters that you just have to know what happens next!

Karou is such a great character. She's fun, caring, and loyal to her family…just don't piss her off because she knows how to fight. She is definitely the kind of girl you want on your side in a battle. I quickly became intrigued by Karou. At first she seems so innocent, but then you find out she has this whole other life. She is obviously lonely, and I found myself feeling empathy for her and her situation. It would be hard not to be able to have 'real' friends, and even with her 'family' she was pretty much left in the dark about everything. I loved her even more for the fact that she didn't just sit around feeling sorry for herself.

I also really liked Brimstone, although he would definitely scare me in a 'don't piss me off or I'll eat you' sort of way, and my fondness for him grew as the story was revealed. I really like that we got to see Brimstone from both Akiva and Karou's points of view. Akiva saw him as nothing but a monster, but Karou had good memories of him, almost father like, and it humanized him a little for Akiva, I think.

As for Akiva, at first I wasn't sure what to think of him. I didn't trust him and thought he could only bring trouble. By the end of the book, however, I was in love with him. I loved him for how he loved Karou (and Madrigal), how he took action for what he believed, even how he fought for her though his hope was gone. He's the kind of guy every girl dreams of.

The author's descriptive writing style quickly captivated me. She knows how to create just enough tension to keep you on edge without drawing it out so long that you are in danger of losing interest. In fact, many times I found myself covering the page across from where I was reading so I wouldn't be tempted to look ahead to see what was going to happen! She also did a really good job with the character's conflicting emotions, really getting them across to the reader. Through her words and descriptions, she brought the characters to life.

I was not sure I was going to like the "switch" in stories from Karou to Madrigal, but I fell into it quickly. While I was reading it, I missed Karou, but eventually grew to love Madrigal and her story just as much.

The story of forbidden love is one that has been told 1000 times over, but Taylor's take was so unique it was like hearing it for the first time. The story was fun to read and captivating. I am eagerly anticipating book two to see where the story is going to be taken.

Days of Blood & Starlight (Daughter of Smoke & Bone #2) by Laini Taylor

Once upon a time, an angel and a devil fell in love and dared to imagine a world free of bloodshed and war.

This is not that world.

Art student and monster's apprentice Karou finally has the answers she has always sought. She knows who she is—and what she is. But with this knowledge comes another truth she would give anything to undo: She loved the enemy and he betrayed her, and a world suffered for it.

In this stunning sequel to the highly acclaimed Daughter of Smoke & Bone, Karou must decide how far she'll go to avenge her people. Filled with heartbreak and beauty, secrets and impossible choices, Days of Blood & Starlight finds Karou and Akiva on opposing sides as an age-old war stirs back to life.

While Karou and her allies build a monstrous army in a land of dust and starlight, Akiva wages a different sort of battle: a battle for redemption. For hope.

But can any hope be salvaged from the ashes of their broken dream?

Hardcover, 517 pages
Published November 6th 2012 by Little, Brown Books for Young Readers

My Review: 5 of 5 stars

I am really not sure I can write in words exactly how much I love this book and series. Taylor has a way of telling a story that makes you live it, breathe it, love it. She gives you enough tension and suspense that you absolutely cannot stop reading, without drawing it out so much that you lose interest. That's a hard balance to find, I think, and Taylor has mastered it. Her writing is colorful and alluring, and her imagination is unsurpassed.

Her characters are nothing short of amazing. This second book in the series delves deeper into the world of the Chimera and Seraphim. We find out more about the characters we loved (and loved to hate) from the first book and are also introduced to some new ones. Each individual character carved out into a unique being that fits into place in the story to reveal a piece of the puzzle Taylor has created with her words.

This second book is darker than the first. They are now in the midst of war, and there is fighting and violence all around. Through the darkness, though, there is sunshine, hope, love, and friendship. I am waiting quite impatiently for the next book. In the meantime, I will have to re-read the first two.

Audio Review: Once again Khristine Hvam does an excellent job of bringing the story to life. I love her voice as the narrator for this story.

Dreams of Gods & Monsters (Daughter of Smoke & Bone #3)
by
Laini Taylor
By way of a staggering deception, Karou has taken control of the chimaera rebellion and is intent on steering its course away from dead-end vengeance. The future rests on her, if there can even be a future for the chimaera in war-ravaged Eretz.

Common enemy, common cause.

When Jael's brutal seraph army trespasses into the human world, the unthinkable becomes essential, and Karou and Akiva must ally their enemy armies against the threat. It is a twisted version of their long-ago dream, and they begin to hope that it might forge a way forward for their people.

And, perhaps, for themselves. Toward a new way of living, and maybe even love.

But there are bigger threats than Jael in the offing. A vicious queen is hunting Akiva, and, in the skies of Eretz ... something is happening. Massive stains are spreading like bruises from horizon to horizon; the great winged stormhunters are gathering as if summoned, ceaselessly circling, and a deep sense of wrong pervades the world.

What power can bruise the sky?

From the streets of Rome to the caves of the Kirin and beyond, humans, chimaera and seraphim will fight, strive, love, and die in an epic theater that transcends good and evil, right and wrong, friend and enemy.

At the very barriers of space and time, what do gods and monsters dream of? And does anything else matter?

My review

I’ve read a lot of series enders this year. Some were good, others not so much. This is one that I did enjoy. I couldn’t say I was thrilled with how things ended in the previous book.
My heart was always torn because I loved Kieron, I just loved Bones more. I always seem to fall for the “home” court guy. The one that’s been there and has always loved. I’m finally figuring that out. Still, Kieron was a great character.
So in this installment, I felt my heart struggle to give into my “heart” for Kieron. Of course this author throws a monkey wrench in the story. But I knew what that wrench was from the first moment it was introduced. So I wasn’t surprised at how things ended. Then again, I also was surprised at my reaction over Kieron through all of this. I don’t want to give spoilers, so I’ll leave it at that.
This book was fast pace and kept my attention the entire time. It was hard to put down and I did very much enjoy.
Overall, I’m pleased to have read this series and will recommend. It’s a good one and well worth your time if you like young adult paranormal romance and/or urban fantasy.
My book boyfriend is Bones.

My Review:

Joe by H.D. Gordon
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

H.D. Gordon’s newest book Joe is probably one of the better books I’ve read this year. HD Gordon is one fantastic author I have no idea how she researched this book to tell us readers this amazing thriller. It’s written with eight different POV’s and HD has done a terrific job, it flows well and I never once did I feel like … OMG what’s going on. Fantastic writing HD Gordon.

Joe is a clairvoyant who ends up in a situation where she must stop a disaster from happening; she has to face the Decider who is as evil and send shivers down your spine. You meet some interesting characters and truly feel for them. The one thing I will say that is negative about this book Joe is that once you start reading it you cannot put it down as have to know what is going to happen next. Without giving too much away all I can say is you must go read this novel. HD Gordon’s writing is amazing, truly one of the better written books I’ve read lately.

This story is a thriller/suspense/heart wrenching and oh a few tears may be shed. I have rated Joe 5 stars and if I was allowed I would say 6. Everyone should read this book especially if you love a good thriller/suspense novel and this is absolutely a book you need to purchase.
